who is a foodie?

A friend recently called me a “foodie,” which I took somewhat offense to.  I equate the term to someone who is snobbish about food, and anyone who really knows me, knows I am anything but snobbish.  While I can have somewhat refined tastes, I am just as happy eating a bag of Mickey D french fries, as I am the beef consomme at One if By Land in Manhattan.  Both are good and have their own special place in my heart (and stomach).

So what is your definition of a “foodie”?

    We’re all foodies…at least for the lucky ones. Otherwise its just eating for survival.

    A foodie isn’t necessarily a snob. You can be happy eating both Mickey D and One if By Land. A foodie can tell the difference between the two though…and likely knows what consomme is.

    Oh yeah…broth :-p

    agreeing with the previous answers, I’d add:

    ‘foodie’ is a term which has cycled into the mainstream as a tag our culture gives those that pay a particular attention to food with the distinguishing characteristic blabbing on about it. The word ‘foodie’ does have an elitist flare, I think in part due to the way we relate to things that taste good to us. Physically, when we taste something that is really awesome, we can’t imagine other amazing tastes… try it sometime. When you are so deep into a flavor and it tastes better than whatever it is you’ve eaten before, it’s almost impossible to think about the best cheese burger or foie gras or pancakes you’ve ever had. It becomes a physically egocentric state.

    I think it’s because of how our brains and tongues, etc are wired… really how our tongues and noses are wired to the brain. Good food is a singular experience which isolates many aspects of our perspective. And so, perhaps, given this hardwired focus, coupled with the fact the much really good food does cost more than the mediocre, the term ‘foodie’ comes to denote one who may be too caught in the genre of culinary chat to the degree that they can’t see the forest for the cheese.

    many non-snobbish people have referred to themselves as “foodies”. I’ts ok, it simply refers to those of us whose enthusiasm for food goes beyond cooking, eating and dining out. reading books about food or chefs, or by chefs, studying the culinary arts in school, traveling the world with our forks, chopsticks and corkscrews ready for the local cuisines, having long conversations about food,etc, yes my fellow foodies, life is good.
